About Me!

Hi!

My name is Lilian Blair and I am a producer and engineer in the Seattle area. I specialize in old school, love-and-support record production. I’m not here to tell you what to do artistically; you are the artist, after all. Rather, I’m here to help you express your art to the fullest, and to help take your musical dreams and bring them out into the world! My role is to be your first fan, sitting in the control room and helping your music transform from a performance into a record.

A bit about me!

I studied Digital Audio Engineering at Shoreline Community College as well as Creative Writing at the University of Washington (which helps heaps when it comes to song workshopping). After school I interned at the historic London Bridge Studios where I learned how to take my college education and apply it at a professional level. Stuff like how to set up too many drum mics (there’s no such thing!); and editing vocals down to the syllable, but only after ensuring we get the best possible performance. After interning I started working out of The Vera Project, where I developed and continue to teach the recording studio workshop, sharing what I’ve learned with the next generation of audio engineers.

My home base is Earwig Studio. It’s a nice, mid-tier studio with an excellent live room (the most important part), and great gear (including lots of guitars and amps and keys for you to play around with) that allows us to make an excellent sounding record, and have fun doing it! It’s not the least expensive option available to us, but it’s still half of what you can expect to pay for the big studios. Not that I’d turn down the opportunity to work at London Bridge again, just that, if you want my recommendation on where to go, it’s Earwig. The results sound great, and we can stretch your budget to give us more days in the studio, and more days equals more fun. My current studio repertoire is, in order of expense: Mysterious Red XEarwig StudioLondon Bridge Studios, and Robert Lang Studios.

What does it look like to work with me?

Well, it all starts with preproduction. This is when we do all our planning and preparation for going into the studio. We’ll workshop the songs, focusing on structure and lyrics and engagement; we’ll go over arrangements; we’ll come up with cool stuff to try in the studio; we’ll figure out what kind of technical servicing we need. Pretty much everything we can think of to make sure that we’re as ready as possible to make the most out of our time in the studio.

Once that’s done and we go into the studio recording should be a breeze of keeper takes and creative fun! Having fun is part of the creative experience, and it’s my job to cultivate that kind of environment. In addition to handling the technical aspects, my role is to oversee how everything comes together. That involves everything from managing the pacing of the project to make sure we stay on budget, to giving feedback on performances to help you be your very best. That’s that “first fan” thing I mentioned earlier. Listening to how things come together and ensuring that it grooves, makes you tap your foot and hum along, moves you emotionally, or whatever else you want your music to elicit in your listeners.

Once we finish recording it’s off to mixing! The point of mixing is to take the raw recordings and make them sound cohesive, both together and compared to each other. More so, it’s that final creative phase where we are able to breathe and utilize a new and expansive toolbox to turn the sound into what it’s meant to be, whether that’s a bells and whistles everything we can think of mix or a stripped down and raw one. I tend to work by myself at home, but we can always do an in studio, analog mix if you want.

After mixing we send the songs off to a mastering engineer who does the final prep for release! Yay!

Thank you for reading my spiel! Please reach out so we can talk more about your project and needs, schedule a coffee, and get to know each other. I’m looking forward to helping you bring your musical dreams to life!
